Co – Response Teams

Journey works with community partners to improve safety

CARES (Community Alternative Response Emergency Services)

The CARES program is a mobile crisis response program that began in 2021. Each CARES team consists of a Journey crisis worker and a Madison Fire Department community paramedic. Teams respond to non-violent behavioral health emergencies (individuals with suicidal thoughts, depression, anxiety, agitation, and others) and perform “welfare checks” (instances when a concerned individual calls 911 to have an agency check on another person). This specially trained team is dispatched as an alternative to police for behavioral health emergencies. The CARES team helps calm situations, identify needs and concerns, and address those issues that they can on the spot.

Law Enforcement Crisis Worker

In collaboration with the City of Madison and Dane County Sheriff’s Department, Journey crisis workers partner with Mental Health Officers/Deputies to respond to active behavioral health crises. They also conduct follow-up with individuals who generate calls for service, with the goal of diverting those individuals from police contact and the criminal justice system, and connecting them to appropriate resources.
