Training Description:
Trauma histories are common among people with substance use disorders (SUDs), as both are conditions that involve adaptations in the brain. Reaching for substances to alleviate the distress and discomfort of trauma starts to make sense, especially when we consider the regulation of the central nervous system.

From this perspective, we know that Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) principles are essential for serving SUD clients. As we examine the similarities in the neurobiology of trauma and SUDs, we will understand how healing trauma fortifies recovery.

Training Objectives:
At the end of this training, participants will be able to:

1. Explain why it's common for people with SUDs to have a trauma history.

2. Discuss why caring for the central nervous system is an important element in supporting recovery from both trauma and SUDs.

3. Examine the many ways to blend trauma-resolution strategies into your practice to support your clients wherever they are in the recovery process.

4. Identify resources and strategies available to helpers and supporters that facilitate healing and recovery.
