Presenter: Sheri Meland, MSW, SAC-IT

Sheri Meland is a clinician in Outpatient Services.  She holds a MS degree from UW Madison in sociology (focus on social psychology) from 2002 and an MSW from 2023.  Additionally, she holds a SAC-IT and enjoys working with folks struggling with substance use. She has always been interested in the intersection between psychological processes and interpersonal interactions, focusing on the ways that perception influences behavioral choices, which in turn influence others’ perceptions, oftentimes creating a reinforcing loop that confirms perception and bias.  When she is not thinking about psychological processes, she enjoys reading, doing jigsaw puzzles, walking her dogs, and hanging out with her family.

Training Information:

Description: This training will include an introduction to the evidence-based practice of CBT.  Participants will learn about the history of the theory of cognitive and behavioral psychologies and will work through an example to better understand the links between thoughts, emotions, and feelings.  Participants will learn the history of Beck’s 1960s development of CBT and be given a short review of the literature supporting CBT as an evidence-based practice.  This training will provide concrete examples of ways that CBT is used to treat kids, SUDs, and psychosis.  Additionally, CBT is often practiced through the use of worksheets, so a large portion of the training will allow participants to work in small groups to complete worksheets and evaluate the process. Participants will also gather more tools for their own future exploration.

Objectives:

After attending this training, clinicians will:

  1. Recognize the importance of helping consumers change their thinking to improve their emotional states and change behaviors.
  1. Understand the theory behind the development of the evidenced-based practice of CBT.
  1. Recognize the many evidence-based supported uses for CBT in practice.
  1. Have practiced using a few basic CBT tools/worksheets.
