Session 2: Veterans in the Legal System - Friday, May 16, 2025
Description: Veterans can become involved with the legal system (both civil and criminal) for several reasons, including mental health issues and struggles adjusting to civilian life. This training will explore what leads Veterans into the legal system, the challenges they face, and how to assist them to exit the system. This will include a presenter sharing his relevant lived experience.
Objectives:
- Recognize what risk factors increase the likelihood that Veterans will struggle to readjust to civilian life.
- Explore the legal challenges Veterans are faced with once involved in the legal system.
- Explain the options available to assist a Veteran in how to exit the legal system.
Presenters: Richard Harris, CAPSW, MSW, WCBTP, WCPS & Edward Zapala, LCSW
Richard Harris is a Wisconsin Certified Peer Support Specialist with the “lived experience” of “Veterans in the Legal System.” Richard provides peer support community reentry services to incarcerated Veterans in Dane County in collaboration with Just Dane, Inc.
